Newton girls basketball coach Jake Bennett anticipates scoring more points in transition next season. The tallest returning player for the Cardinals, who must replace three starting seniors next year, is 5’10” sophomore center Brooke Garvis. The returning forwards who saw playing time this year, including junior starter Tori White and freshman Addyson Cibula are 5’6” and 5’8’. Bennett says moving the ball downcourt quickly and scoring before the defense is set, can help offset their lack of height.
“I know our freshmen have some high IQ coming in to match with Tori, Brooke, and Addy running down the middle of their lane and finding those open transition buckets and then having shooters posted up.”
Four freshmen saw substantial playing time this season for Newton. In addition to Cibula, they were guards Sophia Coady and Camryn Klein, and forward Emerson Ray. The Cardinals finished the year 11-12.
