Iowa Conference woes continued for the Central College basketball teams last night, as the women were dealt a 64-50 loss and the men suffered a 57-50 setback against Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
The women were within seven points with under seven minutes remaining in the game, only to see the Kohawks pull away down the stretch. Starting the game down 11-0 didn’t do the Dutch any favors, and shooting just 27.4 percent from the field made it hard for Central to climb back into the contest, as they slipped to 0-10 in conference play and 5-14 overall. Freshman Bry Pierce came off the bench to lead the team with 12 points, while Sarah Paulson added 10.
The men’s game saw Central suffer from some of their same shortcomings as well, as the Dutch struggled to knock down shots; shooting just 30 percent from the floor, including hitting only 4-of-25 shots from beyond the three-point arc. Still, Central held a 19-11 lead midway through the first half and were down by only one point at intermission, but Coe pulled away in the second half and were able to close the game at the free-throw line. Chris Lehman led the Central offense with 15 points, as the Dutch fall to 12-6 overall and 5-5 in the Iowa Conference in their fifth straight loss.
Both Central basketball teams hit the road again on Saturday, this time to take on Buena Vista University. The Central women were nipped by the Beavers by six points in the first meeting between the teams, while the men’s squad topped BV 74-66 on November 30th in Pella.
